This is a picture of the Mirena IUD (intrauterine device). It is inserted into your cervix and it is pill free and effective birth control for 5 years...well, most people completely enjoy this and it sounds much better than taking pills. Well, I had mine placed almost 3 weeks ago. The pain was so severe and I felt a pop since I had a c-section and with nursing havent menstruated for over 3 years my cervix hadnt been dilated..but I was reassured that it is normal for it to be painful and I took my motrin and went home. The next day I literally was crawling around because the pain was so severe. I called and was assurred that it will cramp for a week then should get better. 1.5 weeks later I called again..the pain wasn't as bad but I literally had sharp pains and was not something I wanted to live with. They told me to come in and they would check it as I am sure they rolled their eyes. When I arrived my dr did an exam (my dr didn't insert it the midwife did) she looked up and asked me if I was sure that it didn't fall out by itself. Pretty sure I am not making up this pain...Anyway after 30 minutes of uterine torture and ultrasounds she determined that my uterus is swollen and infected and the IUD strings are unreachable. Well, 1 week later and a nasty potent antibiotic later I went back today because she thought that once the swelling went down she could get to it...well it appears that it is probably embedded into my uterine wall. She did reassure me that their is a chance that in the past week it could have expelled itself and that what she is seeing on ultrasound could be scar tissue.....Anyway, she said that it is a 90% chance that I will be going into surgery next week and she just hopes that it is still in my uterus and not somewhere else in my abdomen!! I have to wait another week for another ultrasound that a radiologist will read because after all the damage she did while digging around up there today my tissue is all white on ultrasound and nothing will be visible...so sorry if this is gross and I know that many people do have great experiences with these IUD's but I wouldn't recommend it to my enemy!

That's real scary. Pretty sure I won't be getting one of those. Thanks for the heads up. I hope everything goes well for you. I think you should for sure make them pay for everything.
OH My Gosh LynDee, I am so sorry for you. That is horrible and sounds incredibly painful. Nate wanted me to get one of those, since I am not good at remembering the pill, but that is definately not going to happen now. I do hope everything is alright and they can find that damn thing. Good luck and I will be thinking of you.
Oh, I'm so sorry! My midwife tried to talk me in to getting one and now I'm really glad I didn't! Good luck, I hope everything goes well and you don't have to have surgery!
Oh my gosh! I am so sorry. That sucks. I have been asking people about them lately and if they hurt - oh geez. Maybe not anymore. Let us know if we can do anything for you. We would love to take the kids so you can rest.
Oh I am sorry, I wish I would have told you that could happen. I have never really considered getting one because of that. I have ultrasounded people who have had that happen.
Hey, I'm a friend of Ashley Wimmer and she referred me to your blog because I was talking about friends saying that IUD insertions were so painful. But this is beyond pain. This is torture and I am rethinking my IUD plans after my baby comes... I appreciate your sharing so more of us can be informed.
I love how doctors tell you that crawling on the floor for a week is "normal."
Good luck!
Holy crap LynD! I was totally considering that after the baby comes....I'm the biggest wuss too, I probably wouldn't have been able to handle that at all. I'm so scared for you, hope so much you don't have to have surgery. Yikes!!
Oh my heck, that is HORRIBLE! I feel so bad that you had to endure the pain for so long, not to mention while trying to take care of three kids. I have heard some scary stories about those from some other friends too. I hope you don't have to have the surgery. Good luck with everything!
I'm sorry. That is horrible and incredibly miserable. I hope that you don't have to have surgery. That's a really tough thing to take.
Oh my hell Lyndee, that is terrible! Please let me know what happens. i hope it all goes well!
Holy cow. LynDee that's terrible! I can't believe it. Well I hope you don't have to get surgery. Good luck!
